Greening the T’Ships is an idea for urban landscaping to transform communities. Avian Park, the community featured is a township (South African English for an impoverished previously-disadvantaged community) on the outskirts of Worcester. Too often, these townships are communities of urban blight, communities of economic hardship and communities that are wind-swept and dusty. Our environment so often influences our psychology, our ability to see the beauty in the world and can often subtly inform how worthy a community feels.
A desolate community can boost its collective self-esteem and ability to foster an upwardly mobile population from its environment. Notwithstanding the societal necessities of education, health care, affordable housing, safety, employment and economic opportunity… this small “botanical gesture” could go a long way to bridge the gap. It’s not a cure-all, it’s an initiative meant to be complementary to other community interventions.
